Understanding Video Encoding -DIVX AVI Mpeg2

Did you know that you don't have to download the 4gb dvd file to get a great quality video?

Hopefully companies and others have realized now that people don't want to wait three days to see a video that they want to watch.

  • No one is going to pay for a youtube video quality video, unless they are only planning on playing it on a portable media player (ie.Ipod)

Since most people no longer convert video to VCD,SVCD or Mpeg/Mpeg2 format, what is it that it is being convert to? Most video files are being converted to MP4/AVI video now, with a xvid or divx encoding. Depending on the compression and the video size they select the VOB (dvd format) is being compressed down to smaller files.

Example

DVD Format VOB (1.7gb) can be converted to MP4/AVI DIVx to 700-800 MB.

These files are up to 50% smaller.

You can play .avi extension files in media player, etc.. but you'll need to install the codec.

This can be done simply by installing the divx player. You don't have to use it, that's if you perfer a different video player.
